Temple History

Know The Real History of Melukote Temple

The revered Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple in Melukote (Tirunārāyaṇapuram) is a sacred kṣetra with over a thousand years of spiritual heritage. The temple gained prominence in the 12th century under Sri Ramanujacharya, who revitalized worship, established ārādhana traditions, and made it a center of Śrī Vaiṣṇava philosophy.

He rediscovered and reinstalled the utsava-mūrti, Śrī Sampatkumāra (Cheluva Piḷḷai), and nurtured a thriving culture of devotion, Vedic learning, and temple service. The temple continues to uphold these sacred traditions, drawing devotees from across the world.

Celebrated for the grand Vairamudi Utsava, Melukote remains a living symbol of bhakti, kainkaryam, and unbroken paramparā.
